It was good to be asked to attend the Online Educa Berlin conference this month to talk about ‘new educational landscapes’ in a plenary chaired by Gilly Salmon.

My talk focused on Humans, machines and the futures we choose – connecting closely to a very welcome theme within the conference itself: how do we reclaim a sense of individual and institutional agency in the face of the rampant techno-determinism which shapes much of the policy and public narrative?

I looked at the cyclical narratives (disruption, automation, redundancy) we in education have been subjected to over the decades, and – as far as it’s possible to do so in 20 minutes – made a case for telling new stories, from within education, about the kinds of futures we desire.
